不过我觉得问这个问题的人可能是谓语动词和非谓语动词的事情没有弄清楚.所以我再啰嗦几句.
在英语的简单句中,通常都会有一个主要的动词来作为整个句子的谓语,这时候它会发生语态和时态的变化.而其他不充当谓语的动词就被叫做非谓语动词.非谓语动词只有四种形式：不定式,动名词,过去分词以及现在分词.
你举的这个句子主要意思是“这台机器是很受欢迎的”.所以“was”就是主要动词,即整个句子的谓语,所以发生了时态的变化.
而“去年被发明”就是修饰限定机器的成分,叫做后置定语.所以invent并不是句子的谓语,而是非谓语动词,所以这里只用了过去分词来表示“被发明”,而没有加was做成完整的被动语态.
