According to The Times :Students from England who choose to study at a university in Scotland are facing steep （陡、突然）rises in tuition fees in a move designed to prevent a flood of applicants trying to avoid top-up fees south of the border. Under plans being considered by the Scottish Executive, medical students from England could be charged up to ￡15,000 over five years to study in Scotland - the same as they will face in England from next year.

According to The Times :Nearly one in six overseas students at university in Britain is from China as universities turn to overseas students to remain solvent（有偿付能力的）, the Higher Education Statistics Agency revealed（披露）yesterday. Business studies was the most popular course in 2003-04 with 12.5 per cent of the student population choosing this subject, followed by biological and social sciences with 9.2 per cent. Since 2002-03, numbers of Chinese students rose by more than a third from 35,155 to 47,740 last year - with another 10,575 coming from Hong Kong.
Lecturers may boycott Israeli academics

Members of the public are being urged to take part in an online experiment to determine whether smiles are genuine（真）or fake. Professor Richard Wiseman, a psychologist at the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield, hopes the use this information to determine the nature of intuition and to find the most important part of the face for expressing real happiness. The experiment is being run as part of the Edinburgh Science Festival and he expects to have results in 10 days time.

Oscar-winning British actress Helen Mirren is to play Nicolas Cage's mum in the sequel to his 2004 box office hit "National Treasure," the industry press said Thursday.
Mirren, fresh from scooping the best actress award at this year's Oscars for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in "The Queen", will take the role of the mother of Benjamin Gates, played by Cage.
The new romp entitled "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" has Gates seeking to unlock the truth behind the 1865 assassination of US president Abraham Lincoln, Variety magazine said.
Other stars signed up for the Disney family flick include Ed Harris, Jon Voight and Harvey Keitel.
"National Treasure," which came out in 2004, was one of the top 10 films of the year at the US box office, raking in some 173 million dollars, and picking up a similar amount abroad.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Usher is engaged to his longtime girlfriend, stylist Tameka Foster, the R&B singer's spokeswoman said Friday.
Publicist Simone Smalls didn't provide further details.
Usher, a five-time Grammy winner, confirmed the engagement Wednesday to MTV News, ending speculation that he had popped the question.
Foster has been photographed recently with a diamond ring on her finger.
Usher, 28, said he could be walking down the aisle before the end of the year.
His hits include "Confessions," "Burn," "You Make Me Wanna" and "Yeah!"
