when,as,while这三个词都可以引出时间状语从句,它们的差别是：when 从句表示某时刻或一段时间,有“当……时”的意思；
as 从句表示进展过程,有“随着,一边……一边”的意思；
while 只表示一段持续的时间,有“在……的同时”的意思.
例如：
When he arrived home,it was just nine o'clock.
当他到家时,正是九点钟.
As he grew older,he became more intelligent.
随着他年龄的增长,他变得更有才智了.
While she was typing the letter,the telephone rang.
当她在用打字机打那封信时,电话响了.
从考试的角度讲，每个词都有自己的强调重点，是不是可以这样理
1.作“当......时候”讲时，三个词没什么区别，都可以用，但要记住while从句中的动词必须是延续性的。如：
We left when/while/as he was sleeping in his bedroom.
但下面这句话就不能用while了：
While he got up, he felt ...

He sings as he works.
I was about to leave when the telephone rang.
The population density per mile in the United States is twenty-two people,while that in Canada is two people.在美国，没平方英里的人口密度是22人，而在加拿大是2人。

While he was in jail,they were able to talk frequently.
尽管他在狱中，但他们当时还是能够经常谈话。
或是：他在狱中时，他们可以经常谈话。
