第一： out of modesty 不谦虚,说明professor G 高傲,晒命
第二： described himself to his collegeues as a dilettate 向他的同学们把自己形容 成 一个业余爱好者
第三： highly respected book in his field享有很高的respect
那么这样一个享有很高respect的人把自己说成业余爱好者应该是谦虚才对,为何要把他说成晒命呢?

楼主对第二,三点理解正确,但是第一点 out of modesty,不是不谦虚,是“因为谦虚”或“出于谦虚”,像其它表达方法 out of anger,out of benevolence,不是 “没有愤怒”或“没有善心”,而是“出于……”
